An independent opinion

We begin by establishing what the organisation wants to achieve. We then examine the proposed approach, the evidence supporting it and the assumptions on which it is based.

We consider whether the reasoning is sound, whether important matters have been overlooked and whether other approaches deserve consideration.

We are prepared to disagree with a proposal where there are good reasons to do so. Equally, where the evidence supports the proposed approach, we will say so.

A confidential space for constructive challenge

Proximity to a proposal can make it difficult to question assumptions. Cognitive bias, groupthink, organisational culture, professional relationships and previous commitments can influence how options are considered.

We provide a confidential space to examine evidence, reasoning and alternatives, with constructive challenge and no expectation that clients defend an established position.

Confidentiality and reporting arrangements are agreed in the engagement terms, subject to applicable legal obligations.

Considering alternatives

Our work goes beyond identifying weaknesses in a proposal. We consider whether the intended outcome could be achieved differently and examine the risks, trade-offs and practical implications of alternative approaches.

This may involve recommending changes, identifying further evidence that is needed or suggesting a different course of action.

Our advice

We provide a clear assessment and explain the reasons for our conclusions. Depending on the assignment, this may take the form of a discussion, written advice or periodic critical-friend support as a proposal develops.

Our advice may support the proposed approach, question it or recommend changes.

We explain what we think, why we think it and what we would recommend.

The final decision remains with the client.
